View Full Version : Fleece Pocket Layout?

Scott:

As an early customer of SEV, I purchased my first vest/jacket in late 2004 - I believe it was called a 3.0 Cotton. I purchased the 3.0 fleece almost a year later. I really loved the fleece - especially during Pennsylvania winters - but I found myself using it less and less. Solely because of the odd packet layout.

Do you have yet any "detailed pocket specs"? Something that would indicate just how well the pockets on each - Jacket and Fleece - line up?

On my 3.0 versions, the fleece could be worn alone, or used as a zip-in liner for the 3.0 Cotton jacket. The pocket design of the 3.0 cotton was (And is still!) phenomenal; plenty of them, and the sizes and locations seem to be perfect.

However the 3.0 Fleece has a very unusual pocket design - and I am being overly kind. Though the Fleece can be zipped into the Cotton, the pockets do not line up at all. But that's minor. The real issue was inside pockets at breast level that had no bottom - they go all the way down to the bottom of the lining, making whatever you accidentally drop in there virtually inaccessible without removing it and fishing it out. Also, the interior breast pocket - as well as the lower side pockets - go right through to the exterior. The Cotton does not do that so you get used to placing items into the inside breast pockets without worry. However with the Fleece, I inadvertently placed my cell phone into the inside breast pocket and right through out the exterior pocket - dropping it to the sidewalk! Suffice it to say that the Fleece would have greatly benefited from better pocket design!

Now I am looking at the latest versions, and I can't help but to wonder whether or not the pocket designs are any better on the latest Fleece design. Or for that matter, whether the jacket has kept as super a pocket design as the 3.0 Cotton had.

But I can't really tell from the website photos - as extensive as they are - how deep the pockets are, or if the interior pockets go directly through to the exterior at the same level - which obviously is not a desired feature in my opinion.

Basically, I would love a sheet or brochure that specifies all the pockets, dimensions, which other pockets they connect to, and a nice diagram that shows and labels the pockets on both pieces - Jacket and Fleece.

Anything like this available?

Thanks.

Thanks for your questions. We have never received any complaints like this on this product. I am not sure if you are using this product correctly. This product does not have the benefit of a lining like the 3.0 cotton jacket, so we had to be a bit inventive on how to place the pockets. Please confirm that the breast pockts do have zippers that will keep your items secure. It is possible, but not likely, that you received a defective product.

The real issue was inside pockets at breast level that had no bottom - they go all the way down to the bottom of the lining, making whatever you accidentally drop in there virtually inaccessible without removing it and fishing it out.

On my fleece liner, those pockets are also accessible by zippers further down. The breast-level opening is apparently for long things like small umbrellas or something that won't go into the lower entry.

Smaller objects can be dumped in the zipperless top opening and retrieved by unzipping the waist-level zipper just below the Lost Or Stolen tag.

I must not have the same liner you have, as only the vertical breast pockets pass through the the exterior, and that's only if you unzip both the interior and exterior zippers (which is an interesting option, I guess). This doesn't happen with the lower side pockets on mine.

If you're going to use the inner breast-level pockets on the liner, I"d suggest either making sure the outer zipper is closed or carefully feeling around to make sure you're in the pocket you intended before letting go of the objects you plan to store.

An even easier way of accessing the inner pockets of the jacket while the fleece is zipped in would be to partially unzip the zippers that hold the liner in place so they hold at the bottom, but let you reach between the layers.

I agree that the fleece pocket layout is terrible... I doubt I will even use most of the pockets. I think they need to rethink quality over quantity.

btw what are the snaps on the ends of the sleeves for? To attach them together when they are unzipped?

The snaps are to attach to the shell, if you bought a system.

I am very sorry. Everyone seems to be able to figure this out w/o documents. That why I am here to help you on a more personal basis :)
