This was originally a post that Scott made on his blog (http://scottevest.blogspot.com), and it sparked some great conversations. I am reposting his comments here to get us started, but will join in with my own list of 'stuff' too... please do the same!

"We are soliciting opinions on what people typically carry with them daily to help us make our designs better. Being located in Sun Valley, Idaho, I don't travel terribly much, but in my recent trips to NYC and Las Vegas, I found that I carry more items than usual and needed them to be readily accessible, e.g., boarding passes, ID, etc. These trips have helped me come up with the newly designed Travel Vest and Essential Jacket. So, if you have a moment, please post the items you: (1) always carry, (2) would like to carry if you could, and (3) carry only when traveling. See below for my list:

1. Items I Always Carry:

Blackberry 8830 with BlueAnt Headset
iTouch 16gig, with wires
Keys
SunGlasses
Chapstick
Change
Business Cards
Gloves, in winter
Poop bags for my dogs
Mints
Treats for my dogs
Pen

2. Things I would carry with me if I could:

Well, this is kind of difficult for me, since that's why I invented the SCOTTEVEST, to carry with me everything I want to carry, so having said that, it would be cool to have a pocket for snacks that would keep them fresh/warm/cold. I am working on it :)

3. Things I carry when I travel, in addition to above 1

Tons of extra cords to recharge the above devices
Boarding Pass
Tablet Computer, and cords to charge
Portable GPS unit
I forgot to mention my digital camera, which I often have with me everyday too

I am sure I am missing some things, but this is off the top of my head. Please let me know what you carry.

Scott"

This just reminded me I left my chapstick at home this morning :P

Well, I have a list of things I ALWAYS have, and a list of things I'd LIKE to have.

The like pretty much depends on when the next version of the classic Vest comes out, as the fleece even with the sleeves off is a bit warm for Las Vegas.

ALWAYS:

Wallet
Keys w/ 8GB Flash Drive
Sunglasses
Chapstick (when I don't leave it at home on my desk :P)
Blackberry 8310 w/ bluetooth headset
iPod 5G 30GB (I know, I'm out of date now)
Wallet

LIKE
Small tablet PC (with charger if there's room)
Nintendo DS
Paperback Book
Possibly a digital camera

Good list, Able-x. I bet you could fit most of that stuff into a TEC Shirt and deal with the LV heat pretty well. We had 90+ for most of this week in NY, and it was definitely time to shift gear out of my jacket/vest. The performance t-shirts worked out really well, too. They've got 3 pockets, so you'd need to layer to handle the rest of your gear.

OK, it's my turn... I know I'm going to miss some items, and don't go into ALL the gear I carry....

Everyday Carry in my SeV (either the Evolution (http://www.scottevest.com/v3_store/Evolution_Jacket.shtml) or Explorer (http://www.scottevest.com/v3_store/Explorer_Jacket.shtml) depending on weather and circumstances)

"Vintage" Smith Chopper Sunglasses
Wallet
Coins/change
Surefire Z2 or G2 flashlight
iPod Shuffle
Mobile phone
E-mail-enabled mobile phone
Multi-tool (never found a good way to carry this everyday until I wore an SeV)
Moleskine notepad
Pen
4GB thumbdrive (I really want to get an IronKey (http://www.ironkey.com) - does anyone have one?)
Keys
First Aid Kit
Granola or PowerBar
Biz cards

In Hidden Cargo Pants (http://www.scottevest.com/v3_store/hidden_cargo_pants.shtml):
CRKT Pocketknife
Chapstick
Challenge coin
Cash separate from my wallet

If I'm going for a hike or outside my typical area of operation, I may load up with more items so that the SeV is set up more like a Get Home Bag... without the bag. A quick trip to the store or a run, and a TEC Hat or QZip usually covers the bare essentials, though I've been really enjoying the TEC Shirt (http://www.scottevest.com/v3_store/Tec_Shirt.shtml) lately as a useful but cool outer layer.

I was using my TEC Shirt for my carry needs up till recently, even that's a bit toasty when it's 110 outside :P

Hasn't hit 110 yet here in NY! We were pushing 100 a couple times over the past few weeks. Today was in the 80s and I thought I'd give the Travel Vest a try since I needed to carry a lot of stuff to and from a video edit, and it was actually fine in the heat. If I were camping, I probably wouldn't wear it all day (just at night) but that's why the new tropical weight vest is being made. You can check it out here (http://scottevest.blogspot.com/2008/07/new-video-studio-preview-of-tropical.html).

Since this is the 'what do you carry' thread, I'm upped the amount of water I keep with me every day for the summer, and keep a packet of Gatorade mix with me in case I need extra hydration. I have a Camelbak and could string it up, but I've never really gotten into carrying the Camelbak for everyday use.

Currently I carry a minimal number of items in my jacket. just keys, travel ID and Access passes. I do, however, have to carry a tactical backpack to carry the rest of my gear.

1x Medical kit. Below is the additional gear i pack to supplement that kit.
4x Olaes trauma bandages
4x Z-Pak gauze packs
2x packs Celox hemostat agent
2x 4 inch x 4 yard compression wraps
1x 6.5 inch x 4 yard compression wraps
1x Ferro Rod
1x Mag block
1x Fenix Flashlight
2x thermal blankets
1x EMT seatbelt cutter
1x window break
1x small binoculars
1x ziplock bag with 6 batteries for the flashlight
2x 8 hour calyum sticks

Looking at the SeV Evolution Jacket I can see that a good part of the gear can be moved out of the pack and I will quite probably be able to move to a much smaller pack or even a fanny style pack for the larger medical kit. something like a maxpedition sabre pack. The other bonus is accessibility, I can keep more of the items that are critical in my jacket and not have to worry about the pack.

I am looking forward to the USPS shipping option to go live. Cheers and thanks for making such an innovative product.

I should point out that I am not an EMT my first aid-work is voluntary. Having said that I wonder if there is not an opportunity here for your company to design a custom product aimed directly towards EMT folks.

Hi Tyrus - thank you for volunteering in emergency medicine. First responders of all types keep the world spinning.

We have not developed any products specifically for EMTs, but we do have a lot of customers who use them for those purposes, particularly our vests and jackets. Properly laid out, you can keep a significant amount of gear in an Evolution (which is internall set up similarly to our vests). Picture a document pouch or letter-sized manila envelope about the size of a magazine. If you can lay out your gear to fit into that shape and not jumble around, you could easily carry it all in the PubPocket (interior pocket for magazines/books) or in the back pocket. Hmmm... maybe we should design something for that....

My suggestion would be to see how far you can go in carrying your gear in the jacket (it's a lot more comfortable than a backpack or waist pack). Then, if you need extra storage for specialty gear, bulky items, or things that you don't need immediate access to, look at an additional storage option. You will probably find that you can get away with a much smaller bag or waist pack, if you even need one at all. Maxpedition is good kit, and well made.

If you have any more questions or comments, please continue to post!

Lets see... before the Sansa, and accident, I carried at all times:
-AA Batteries
-Sony Walkman CD Player
-In-Ear buds wired through the Tactical
-Second pair of poly buds
-Wallet
-Keys in either pocket
-Santas Bubblegum coal bags in either pocket (my coin bags)
-Business cards for local bike shops, etc, and my own business cards
-Mounted on the top lapel thingy on shoulder, my Blackberry pearl holster.
-Moto H700 in top breast pocket.

On job:
-2 Flash Cards
-a pair of flash drives
-One 80 gig external harddrive for those days
-IDE/SATA-USB cables
-Receipts.

After the Sansa
Everything same except instead of a walkman I carried the sansa, and due to its size I got creative once and wired it from the arm pocket, that was fun. Till one time I forgot I had it wired there when I was removing sleeves >.> oops, pooor philips. New pair!
