"I've been trying to tell if the "sand" color is more like beige or more like white. I hope it's the former since too light would probably show more of the dirt."

The color of the Essential Jacket is more beige than white for sure. Every computer monitor is a little different, but the photos on the model are more accurate than the 'headless' product shots in terms of color. As far as showing dirt goes, the vests are Teflon-treated, so they are pretty darn good at repelling stains and water. I have the Men's version in the same color and it has held up well despite rugged use.

My essential jacket in "Desert Sand" is more like a mottled brown camo now. Teflon or no I wore it out to an oil rig in the desert (hey, it gets cold in some deserts!).

A week of sleeping in it, oil spray, some unknown grease, "lamb" stew spilled on it and campfires, even teflon gives it up. I wound up letting this one be the jacket for campouts. As Scoutmaster I always have to be able to pull something out of my hat to save the day. Now it is out of the jacket....
