Four cities, three nights - the going is always good when you're traveling. I slip on my SeV and glide through customs without hesitation. Everything I need is with me... and I save money on checked baggage every day!

Is this you?

Although I am definitely a gadget guy, it isn;t ipods but knives, flashlights. lasers, binoculars, etc. obviously the knives can;t go overseas in the jackets and pants....

qualified for CO Platinum again this year by the end of april...75,000 miles. bad few months. Sev gear is great leverage because I hate to check bags. I don;t even like to travel with people who check bags. I did a two week trip (london, frankfurt, dubai, singapore and several jaunts) with only carry ons courtesy of some serious pockets in trousers and jackets.....

Lasers, knives, binoculars and flashlights, I'm all over that.

I really wanted to get a really good utility knife and flashlight what to you recommend fracmeister ?

By the way I really hate carry-on too, I use my Travel Vest for that all the time.

By utility I am not sure what you mean. My favorite "production" (as opposed to custom) pocket knife is a Sebenza. Maker is Chris Reeves. SImple design, titanium slabs, holds an edge well. That said most of my knives are custom made. See http://www.knifeart.com/chrisreeve.html for some examples. Cheaper than the Sebenza you can look at a lot of knives....Spuderco is a popular brand on the lower end. Great choice for more tactical is one of my favorite sites, www.tripleaughtdesign.com

Personally I love the Surefire flashlights. Top end and in every size. That said you can get less expensive Pelican, streamlight, princeton tec or other such brands. DEFINITE recommendation to buy them at www.brightguy.com Wide array of choices.

All depends on budgets and goals. If you get into the custom knives it can cost you. Try www.candlepowerforums.com if you want all the scoop on flashlights.

For flashlights, I carry a Surefire in my SeV and a tiny Inova in my pants pocket. I also keep a few LED keychain lights hanging from various zippers on bags, keys, etc. Surefires are great, but they use CR123 batteries which you may have difficulty finding depending on where you are. I really want the new Surefire Backup light, but I can't justify the cost (yet). A buddy of mine has a tiny Gerber LED and it rocks.

Sebenza's are top of the line, but I know that livesuperman is in Canada, so blade length is an issue. I think your carry laws are <3" (approx. because you're on metric) for folders. The Boker Subcom may work for you, since it looks and acts like a real "utility" knife, no mistaking it for a weapon. Spydercos are good, too, and they make smaller models. Swiss Army Knives are a classic, of course. It depends on how you plan to use it - do you need to open it with one hand, what kinds of chores are you planning to use it for, etc. and then go back from there. You don't need an L6 steel blade to open mail (but I wouldn't fault you for wanting one).

Thanks guys that some really good advice and I'll check out all those websites and forums. Here in Canada you're not allowed to carry a knife blade longer than the width of your hand, our laws are strict.

Thanks again !

If you really want a great knife that will be Frozen Tundra legal, check out my favorite knifemaker at www.turnbulknives.com (I did the website!) or check out a typical offering (on ebay from him) http://cgi.ebay.com/Custom-folder-by-Ralph-Turnbull_W0QQitemZ220278636064QQihZ012QQcategoryZ4 3334QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

That is one sweet looking knife and illustrates what can be done by modern Damascus steel makers.

I'm in an airport every other day/week so when the weather calls for it, it's a toss up between my old TWiT logo-ed fleece pull over or my more heavier 5.0 jacket.

Has anyone had a TSA agent ask to search your Scottevest? I've had the xray shuffle a couple times but never a "please come with me sir" event :p

It would probably be a good idea to go over what exactly you can carry in your vest, fleece or jacket.

It's quite a list (http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm) that can easily be carried in the pockets that are, none the lesss, disallowed or carry some limitation on quantity and type of container...

But if you're just driving, I suppose it never hurts to bring in an extra set of nunchakus ;)
